Drama at Talladega… Imagine that

Once again, the question is whether or not NASCAR made the correct call on the track, and whether it follows what can be found in the rule book. If nothing else, we have most certainly realized that interpretations vary, and prodominately different from those of the NASCAR officials.

Other drivers said afterward they had the same understanding that “anything goes” on the last lap. But Jim Hunter, NASCAR’s vice president of corporate communications, insisted in a post-race statement that the rule had been clearly spelled out for all the competitors at the pre-race drivers’ meeting. Paul Menard has reached an agreement to drive for Yates Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series beginning with the 2009 season.

Menard’s Ford Fusion will feature sponsorship from Menards, his father’s Midwest-based hardware chain that will follow him from his current ride at Dale Earnhardt Inc. Yates Racing can make whatever statement they want to, but we all know this entire deal was made solely on the fact that Menard would guarantee at least ONE sponsorship for the team. Yates has struggled to bring in any sponsors at all, but this addition driver/sponsor is a huge step for the entire team. As a driver, Paul Menard has yet to impress me in any way shape or form! Jimmie Johnson was able to hold off a very hard charging Carl Edwards to take the win at Kansas Motor Speedway in the Camping World RV 400 presented by Coleman. With that victory, Johnson now sits just 10 points ahead of Edwards in the point standings with seven races to go in the season. Read More »

Hendrick Motorsports will enter 24-year-old Brad Keselowski in two Sprint Cup Series events before the end of the 2008 season, marking the successful young driver’s first step into NASCAR’s top division.
Brad Keselowski (center) tells Dale Earnhardt Jr. (left) and Jeff Gordon how his Haas CNC Racing Chevrolet is handling during Sprint Cup testing at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Keselowksi is testing Haas CNC's No. 70 on Monday.

Keselowski will attempt to qualify a fifth Hendrick Motorsports entry, the No. 25 Chevrolet, for the Oct. 11 Bank of America 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway and the Nov. 2 Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. Veteran crew chief Lance McGrew will step in to lead the effort. Read More »

Biffle is 2 for 2 in the Chase

With his second win in a row, driver Greg Biffle has become a serious Sprint Cup Series title threat after winning the Camping World RV 400 at Dover. With no wins in the first 26 races of the season, he has already claimed the first two in the chase and moved himself from 9th to 3rd in points, only 10 points behind Carl Edwards. Read More »

Greg Biffle found Victory Lane for the first time this season and made a giant leap toward the top of the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings, while Kyle Busch saw all of his hard work over the pass 26 weeks disappear in one afternoon.

Biffle passed Jimmie Johnson on Lap 289 of Sunday’s Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and held on for the victory, the 13th of his career and his first since winning at Kansas Speedway in the third race of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup last year. Johnson led the most laps and gained a tie with Edwards at the top of the Chase standings, though Edwards gets credit for first place with six victories this year to Johnson’s four. Read More »

This weekend will be the first race in the chase, the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. This will be a race that could potentially set the momentum for the chase as all 12 drivers want to get a head start on the others with that first win. Two of the drivers in the chase, Jeff Burton and Jeff Gordon, have competed in all 27 races held at NHMS, but does that give them any advantage over the others? Roush Fenway Racing and Hendrick Motorsports are tied with most wins at New Hampshire, and Chevrolet has won 5 of the past 7 races there, all factors that should be included in picking the race winner. 14 of the 27 races have been won from the top-10 starting positions, but with the field being set by points this time, how much truth will that hold? The slumping economy’s effect on the sport of NASCAR are becoming more and more evident. What was once the powerhouse in the Craftsman Truck Series, Dodge plans to stop providing financial support to that series next year. The manufacturer won 46 of 99 races from 2001-04, but only two teams are racing full-time in Dodges in the Truck Series this season. Read More »

As Sunday’s weather-delayed Chevy Rock & Roll 400 came to an end, once again it was Jimmie Johnson in the No. 48 Lowes Chevrolet that was being chased by 42 other drivers.

In a race postponed from Saturday night due to the threat of Tropical Storm Hanna, Johnson was able to hold off Tony Stewart in a very tight side-by-side battle in the closing laps at Richmond International Raceway to win his second consecutive race. That was his fourth of the season and the 37th of his career. This scenario has begun to seem all too familiar now as Johnson has won 3 of the past 7 races to secure the third seed inthe Chase for the Sprint cup, behindKyle Busch with 8 victories, and Carl Edwards with wins this season.
